Thankfully, everything was set right when the series reigns were handed back to the original group that was SingleTrac and we got Twisted Metal Black. In my mind, this sort of explains why 3 sucked so much (half of the time you’re vehicle was flipped on it’s side), and although 4 was a pretty good step up from it, it just didn’t ‘feel’ like the first two games in spirit.
I just recently learned that the source code and physics engine for Twisted Metal 2 weren't available because they were the property of SingleTrac, and new ones had to be created from scratch instead. When developer SingleTrac was unceremoniously removed from Twisted Metal development after a dispute with Sony, 989 Studios was tasked with creating Twisted Metal 3.
